Advocate

Advocate

Only you are able to define yourself as a NAMI-WCI advocate. NAMI-WCI has a strong presence in the state of Indiana, advocating for state laws in addition to local and county policies and ordinances that will ensure that people struggling with mental illness are able to receive the help they need. NAMI-WCI maintains an active presence on priority issues, driven by our board-directed Public Policy Platform. Stay updated about our advocacy issues in the Greater Lafayette Area.

Our Advocacy Tips: Sharing Your Story

When practicing advocacy, sharing your story is one of the best ways to enable others to understand your passion for creating and sustaining better policies to help those living with a mental illness.

Stories and emotions work best through oral interpretation. Here’s how you can practice and refine sharing your story:

Share Your Story Through Advocacy

  • Write to or meet with your district supervisor
  • Do your research – create a straightforward fact sheet
  • Follow up with legislative assistants

Practice Writing and Telling an Effective Story

  • Make an introduction, tell your unique story
  • Talk about challenges related to this story
  • Don’t hesitate to add details – paint a vivid picture
  • Express a desired outcome
  • Conclude your story, Make the “Ask”
  • Thank the listener for their time and attention

Lobbying by Personal Visit

  • Lobby in groups of fewer numbers – if possible, bring constituents along
  • Make an appointment
  • Be courteous and start on a positive note
  • Listen carefully
  • Clearly state your position, and communicate what you are asking from the legislator
  • Reinforce meeting with a NAMI handout
  • If the legislator is unavailable, meet with the legislator’s aide

If someone doesn’t see your value, it doesn’t disappear. Even if that “someone” happens to be you. Your value is inherent. It’s something you have just because you are here and you are you. Even when you don’t feel like you matter, even when someone else treats you as if you don’t matter, you do.Just being here, being you, makes you valuable and worthy of love, kindness, respect, and compassion. Sometimes it can be hard to remember this when someone treats you badly (or you treat yourself badly), but it’s true. No matter what, you matter. 🩷🧡💛💚🩵💜 ... See MoreSee Less
